Iowa State Fair's Butter Cow Vandalized
The Iowa State Fair’s iconic and beloved butter cow sculpture was vandalized over the weekend. The cow, an Iowa State Fair tradition since 1911, was covered with red paint and the words "Freedom for all" had been smeared across the glass window of the butter cow’s refrigerated enclosure. The vandals are allegedly from an animal rights group, Iowans for Animal Liberation—at least, that is who’s taking credit.
According to a press release sent to KCRG Channel 9 News, the red paint "represents the blood of 11 billion animals murdered each year in slaughterhouses, egg farms and dairies." The press release went on to explain how the vandals hid inside the Agriculture Building and came out after closing in order to deface the sculpture. The release also stated that the act was meant as a "wake up call" for meat eating omnivores everywhere.
However brazen the act and for whatever reasons it was done, fair goers won’t miss out on a thing. All the paint on the sculpture was scraped off and the cow repaired by time the fair gates opened.
The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.
