July Milk Production Up 1.1%

The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that July milk production was up 1.1% in the country, and up 1.2% in the top 23 dairy states.

While milk production is up 93 million pounds in the first seven months of the year, the percentage increase is barely perceptible, up 0.07%. Year-to-date, production totals just over 119 billion pounds.

Milk production declined in most major western states: California, down 3.5%; Arizona, down 2%; Idaho, down 1.1%, and Oregon, down 0.9%. Washington state was up 3.8%, and New Mexico was up 1.9%.

In the other major producing states, Wisconsin was up 2.9%, New York, +1.1%, Pennsylvania +1.2%, Texas, +5.3% and Minnesota, +2.9%.

On a percentage basis, the top increases came in Kansas, +10.8%, Iowa, +8.6% and Indiana, +7.6%.

Because of Federal budget sequestration, the National Agricultural Statistics Service did not conduct farm surveys. Thus, there again were no cow number or milk per cow data available.
