October Milk Production Rises 1.2%
Kansas leads the percentage increase with 6.1% more milk than a year ago.
Milk production in the 23 major states during October totaled 15.4 billion pounds, up 1.2% from October 2012, USDA said today in its monthly milk production report.
Milk output rose over year-earlier levels in several key states:
Arizona +4.1%
California +1%
Colorado +2.2%
Florida +5.0%
Indiana +5.7%
Iowa +3.8%
Kansas +6.1%
Texas +3.8%
Utah +5.0%
Idaho saw its milk production drop by 2.7% from October 2012.
September’s revised production, at 14.8 billion pounds, increased 1.0% from September 2012. The September revision represented a decrease of 13 million pounds or 0.1% from last month’s preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,806 lb. for October, 14 lb. above October 2012.
The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states numbered 8.50 million head, 36,000 head more than October 2012, but 2,000 head less than September 2013.
