May Milk Production Up 1.4%
Milk production for May climbed 1.4% in the United States, the highest monthly rate of increase this year, according to the monthly milk report released by the United States Department of Agriculture this afternoon.
Cow numbers also jumped 10,000 head over April, now at 9,252,000—the highest level since May 2012. Since January, cow numbers have increased 40,000 head.
The big gainers in milk production were Texas, up 10.1%; Colorado, up 9.5%, and Kansas, up 7%. States with declining milk production, at least from a year ago in May, were Ohio, -2.5%; Pennsylvania, -1.4%; Vermont, -0.4%, New York, -0.3% and Minnesota, 0.1%.
California was up a modest 1% in milk production over May 2013 with cow numbers unchanged from April 2014. Wisconsin milk production was flat in May compared to last year with cow numbers also unchanged from April.
