A Thumb-area dairy farm owner says some cows have been killed by a tornado that struck his buildings in Sanilac County, Mich.

Henk de Vor tells the Port Huron Times Herald that fewer than 40 cows died at the family's 3,500-cow dairy operation in Decker.

The newspaper and WXYZ-TV report that barns on the property were torn in half and debris from the destroyed buildings fell onto the cow stalls inside.

Volunteers helped rescue some of the trapped cows.

The tornado was one of several spawned by severe thunderstorms that crossed the state late Monday and early Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said other tornadoes struck in the Ionia County community of Portland as well as in Saint Clair and Washtenaw counties. Another tore a path through Saginaw and Tuscola counties.
