Deadly Hog Virus Discovered in Manitoba
In 2014, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) took the lives of close to 8 million piglets in the United States and Canada has now resurfaced in Manitoba.
The first on-farm case of PEDv in more than three months has been discovered in a sow barn.
Manitoba has been ground zero for PEDv in Canada. According to Manitoba’s chief veterinary officer, samples are being taken at other hog operations within a 3-mile radius from the infected site.
The PED virus is fatal in very young pigs, but older animals typically recover.
The government is focusing its investigation on livestock trucks as a possible source of the virus.
