Winning Ways a Family Affair
A tradition of competing pushes the McKinvens family of Lookout Farm in North Hatley, Quebec.
Farm owners Callum McKinven and his wife, Katherine, have been showing here since the mid-1980s. Their daughters, Tara, Brooke and Alana, started competing as teenagers.
Along with a Junior Champion and three Reserve Junior Champions in the International Holstein Show, they’ve had two Reserve Intermediate Champions in the International Jersey Show.
“Doing well here really comes down to putting in the hard work throughout the entire year,” says Callum, who has also served as a judge at Expo 10 times.
The McKinven daughters plan for the various shows the family participates in throughout the year. “With Expo, we start planning for the next year the week after we get home,” he says.
“The showing we’ve done here has led to many marketing opportunities. Every year, we look forward to seeing the friends we’ve made through exhibiting and judging. Once you start coming here, it’s really hard to miss.”
