Pennsylvania Dairy Producer Honored by Beef Checkoff Program

Pennsylvania dairy producer Logan Bower received one of four Beef and Dairy Beef Quality Assurance Awards this week from the national beef checkoff program.

The awards were created to recognize outstanding beef and dairy producers from across the country who incorporate quality assurance principles as part of the day-to-day activities on their operations.
Also honored with a Beef Quality Assurance Award was Wayne Fahsholtz, a calf-raiser whose Padlock Ranch is based near Dayton, Wyo.
In a first, the beef checkoff program also presented a beef quality assurance Marketer Award, which went to Morris Larson, general manager of Spencer Livestock Sales. The award was open to livestock markets, cattle buyers and supply-chain programs that promote BQA to their customers and offer them opportunities to get certified.
Dr. Dee Griffin of the University of Nebraska received the BQA Educator Award, for individuals or companies that provide high quality and innovative training to individuals that care and handle cattle throughout the industry chain.
Bower’s dairy, Pleasant View Farms, is located in Blain, Pa. The dairy’s 550 milk cows produce more than 13 million pounds of milk annually. Pleasant View Farms raises 550 herd replacements to support the milking herd. The forage needs for the 1,100 head of dairy animals are raised on 750 acres of cropland.
Bower has sought to utilize resources as efficiently and as responsibly as possible to produce a high quality, wholesome product, the beef checkoff program said. Extra attention to animal care and stewardship have returned great rewards to Pleasant View Farms, both in productivity and high quality products.
