Milk production continues to concentrate in fewer and fewer counties across the United States, with nine counties in California and Lancaster County, Penn. marketing 25% of all milk produced within the Federal Order (F.O.) system and California.
“The magnitude of milk from nine California counties with the most marketings—over 150 million pounds each—dwarfs a majority of all other counties combined,” reports Shaun Henderson with the Federal Milk Market Administrator’s office in Shawnee Mission, Kan. Tulare County is the largest milk producer in the system.
The report is based on milk marketed in December 2011. Since December 2006, 737 counties increased their milk marketings while 1,222 counties decreased.
Fifty-seven counties produce 50% of all F.O. and California milk. These 57 counties represent just 3.2% of the 1,787 counties with F.O. and California milk, and are down from 62 counties five years ago.
