New York Redefines CAFOs
New York will redefine confined animal feeding operations. Currently, herds with 200 or more cows are required to obtain a CAFO permit. The new regulations will set that threshold at 300 cows, reports The Journal News, a Westchester, N.Y. newspaper.
The move, announced today by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, will allow dairy farms to expand to meet the growing demand for milk for use in yogurt. Meeting CAFO requirements and obtaining the permit can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 per farm.
Chobani’s Greek Yogurt, which originated in New York, is building a plant in Idaho in part because of its inability to obtain enough milk in New York.
