LMA Puts Teeth Into Animal Care Policy
The Livestock Marketing Association (LMA), made up of livestock auction markets, dealers, order buyers, feeders, packers and allied industry, has put teeth into its animal care policy.
Any member not adhering to the policy faces expulsion from the Association. The expulsion language and process was adopted as a by-law amendment July 27, and was passed overwhelmingly by members, says Laura Marks, LMA director of communications and training.
“The policy passed by these members demonstrates their commitment to proper animal care for the auction customers, consumers and livestock entrusted to their care,” she says.
LMA’s animal care policy covers loading and unloading, cattle movement, flooring surface, and handling of downer livestock as well as euthanasia. For example, it recommends the use of paddles and flags for cattle movement, sparing use of electric cattle prods and prohibition of prods powered by AC. The policy was first adopted in 2008.
