My wife, Pam, and I started Prairie View Dairy with a partner in 1978. Bailey County, Texas, had only two dairies at that time, so we were pioneers in our area, starting with 350 Holsteins on 80 acres.
I am a manager/stockholder for Larson Dairy Inc. Okeechobee is the southernmost point at which milk is produced in Florida. My grandfather started our dairy business in 1947.
The single largest risk to any of our businesses is death. We have chosen to purchase life insurance to avail me or my partner the flexibility to unwind each other’s position in the business.
As dairy farmers, we have always had a healthy respect for our natural resources. We strive to be good environmental stewards like most dairy farmers do,
Times sure have changed since we started farming in 1981. We now spend more time and money dealing with manure, record-keeping and documentation of where every animal is and where every load of manure goes.
