DFA Set to Close Indiana Manufacturing Plant

Dairy Farmers of America has announced they are closing their manufacturing plant near Decatur, Indiana.

Recently Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) announced they are closing their manufacturing plant near Decatur, Indiana.

This fall, production will cease in their facility in Adams County, Indiana. The plant makes ice cream products for Mayfield Dairy, Dean’s Country Fresh and Friendly’s brand.

“Unfortunately, the financial challenges associated with running the facility are just too great,” Galloway said in a press release. “The employees here have done an excellent job producing quality ice cream products, and we sincerely appreciate their hard work and dedication.”

Production is scheduled to stop on September 10. Currently 160 people work at the Decatur plant and DFA stated in their press release that they are working with local agencies to identify employment opportunities and job placement services.

“This was a difficult decision, but we have a responsibility to our dairy farmer-owners to operate a financially sound businesses that bring them additional returns on their investments in the Cooperative,” Galloway said.

Dean Foods filed for bankruptcy in November 2019 and entered into a $425 million asset purchase agreement with DFA in February 2020.

DFA states that a major contributing factor to its decision to close its Decatur manufacturing plant is the changing market conditions.
