The collaboration between the National Dairy Checkoff, Dairy Management, Inc., and the National Milk Producers Federation has spearheaded an initiative to elevate the standards within the dairy industry. This collaboration officially established the National Dairy FARM Program in 2009, with a focus on animal care and welfare, environmental stewardship, workforce development, and biosecurity. The program aims to enhance the communication of the industry’s successes through various best management practices.
Introducing the National Dairy FARM Program
Recently, Emily Yeiser Stepp, the executive director of the National Dairy FARM Program, joined AgriTalk, and discussed with the host, Chip Flory, the program’s objectives and the successes they’ve achieved. As Yeiser Stepp explains, “The National Dairy FARM Program is the U.S. dairy industry’s on-farm social responsibility program.” The initiative helps dairy farms convey the positive actions they undertake to gain consumers’ trust and assurance in the dairy aisle.
Standards and Best Practices
Farmers play a pivotal role in shaping this program by participating in decision-making processes, setting standards, and establishing best management practices. These efforts aim for long-term business sustainability, providing a robust marketplace for dairy products. Yeiser Stepp notes that an impressive “99% of the food milk supply” is engaged in the animal care program, showcasing widespread industry participation.
Customizable Approaches for Farmers and Processors
The program offers a customizable approach, allowing co-ops and processors to adopt all the pillars, or choose specific areas of focus based on their needs and customer pressures. Yeiser Stepp describes it as a “pick your own plan approach,” adaptable to each entity’s unique circumstances.
Yeiser Stepp acknowledges the uncertainty of whether consumers will pay a premium for products with low carbon intensity scores. However, she indicates that documenting these aspects could provide a competitive advantage domestically and globally.
“As long as we have that track record and those proof points to gather that data,” she asserts, “it makes our job all the easier to sell the product.”
Workforce Development: A New Pillar for Dairy Farmers
Among the new focus areas of the FARM program is workforce development. Recognizing that most dairy farmers specialize in managing cows rather than people, the program provides a framework for human resources and safety.
Yeiser Stepp clarifies, “We are not OSHA. We are not checking regulatory frameworks by any means.” Instead, the objective is to create a platform for best management practices, aiding farmers in effectively managing their workforce.
The National Dairy FARM Program is a testament to the industry’s dedication to progress, sustainability, and responsibility. Through its dynamic and customizable approach, it equips dairy farmers with the tools necessary for a sustainable future while boosting consumer confidence in dairy products.
