Some 323 employees at a milk-processing plant in northern New Jersey have gotten pink slips just before Christmas.

Farmland Dairies will close the plant in Wallington and produce its products at other plants.

The announcement comes two months after nearby Consolidated Dairies went out of business in a legal dispute with Farmland, costing 138 jobs.

Union official Joe Fontano tells The Record newspaper they’re good-paying union jobs with job benefits that are going to be lost.

Bruce Krupke of the Northeast Dairy Foods Association says consumers are drinking less milk and the industry is feeling the pressure.
