Lawmakers Push for 2% and Whole Milk to Return to School Cafeterias

A new bill could put 2% and whole milk back in schools.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is proposing bill that allows schools to serve 2% and whole milk. It passed the House Education and Workforce Committee earlier this month.

Supporters say kids are more likely to drink milk if it has a better taste. Opponents say lower fat milk has the same nutrients but less saturated fat. If passed, the new bill would reverse a 2012 rule that only permitted schools to serve non-fat or 1% milk to children over two-years-old.
