Cracking the Nutrition Code for Beef-on-Dairy Cattle

Traditional benchmarks fall short for Angus × Holstein crosses. To unlock their true feedlot potential, nutritionists must treat these animals as an entirely unique biological type.

Beef-on-dairy cattle are no longer a novelty. They are established in the U.K., growing in importance in Ireland and other European countries and becoming a permanent part of the U.S. beef supply as the beef cow herd remains tight. Their performance now affects feed efficiency, days on feed and carcass value.

Working firsthand with these cattle has convinced me that we should feed them as a unique biological type. Take an Angus × Holstein steer. It is not a Holstein with a better carcass, nor an Angus with more frame. It combines the appetite, skeletal growth and later maturity of dairy genetics with the earlier fat deposition and carcass traits of the beef sire. But change the beef genetics and the animal changes with it. Even beef-on-dairy is not one uniform biological type. That variability complicates feeding decisions.

Two Sides of the Atlantic

In the U.S., discussion centers on receiving, feedlot gain, liver abscesses and carcass value. In Ireland and other European countries, where many enter intensive systems at lighter weights, the same questions appear earlier: How quickly concentrate should increase, how much effective fiber must remain and when the animal is ready for a finishing diet.

These questions also matter in the U.S., as more calves enter feedlots as early growers rather than passing through a stocker phase.

The Real Battleground: Intake Consistency

When growth disappoints, the usual response is simple: increase ration energy. That can help when cattle arrive underfed. More often, it creates a more expensive ration that cattle consume less consistently.

Before increasing dietary energy, determine whether cattle are consuming the present ration consistently from day to day. Intake consistency is the real battleground.

The Danger of Aggressive Feeding

Beef-on-dairy cattle eat aggressively, but that does not mean they tolerate aggressive feeding. Rapid diet changes, variable bunk management and excessive starch pressure can disrupt intake.

As energy density rises, mixing accuracy, ration dry matter, forage structure, delivery timing and bunk management become increasingly important.

Defining New Benchmarks

Even with good management, important questions remain unanswered. Maintenance energy requirements are still uncertain. This is not academic trivia. It affects how we judge feed efficiency, expected gain and days on feed. Using beef or dairy benchmarks may create misleading expectations.

This series will discuss how beef-on-dairy cattle should be fed from calf development through finishing. Its premise is simple: They should not be squeezed into programs designed for another biological type.

They are a distinct animal and should be fed as one.
