Elle Purrier, a Vermont dairy farmer’s daughter, smashed the American record for the indoor mile over the weekend at the 113th Millrose Games with a time of 4 minutes 16.85 seconds.

Purrier beat track legend Mary Slaney’s 37-year-old national record by nearly four seconds while her 4:16.85 is the world’s second-fastest time in history, according to the Burrlington Free Press.

The Free Press reports Purrier was in third place at the lap bell and turned up her pace to finish the race in 1st place, establishing a meet record at the historic competition held at The Armory in New York City.

Purrier, who signed with New Balance in 2018, made the U.S. national team last year and has excelled in her pro career. Prior to turning pro, she was a decorated college athlete at the University of New Hampshire, seizing the NCAA indoor mile record and earning 11 All-American titles.
