The total volume of U.S. dairy imports monitored by the National Milk Producers Federation fell 19% in the first half of 2009.
“Imports of butter, butter substitutes and Cheddar cheese are up substantially compared to [the first half] of 2008,” notes NMPF. “However, imports of these products in 2008 were down substantially in 2007. The total of all cheeses Import Watch tracks is up due to the rise in Cheddar cheese imports while the other three cheeses are down significantly.
“Imports of milk proteins continue to lag behind 2008 levels. In fact, total imports of milk protein concentrates are at their lowest level in five years. The same is true for casein and caseinate imports as well.”
