Beyond the Rumen: Exploring Yeast and Cattle Health

Considering yeast supplementation for your cattle? Dr. Matt Dodd explains why the specific health goal and product research should guide the decision.

Research on yeast in cattle has long centered on rumen function and production. More recent work is digging deeper into another potential role: how yeast-derived products may influence immune response, inflammation and recovery from health challenges.

Dr. Matt Dodd, ruminant field technical specialist with Diamond V, says some of that shift has come from observations made in the field. Producers and veterinarians have reported health changes after introducing yeast products, raising questions about whether those effects could be measured and explained.

In one case, a reduction in digital dermatitis caught researchers’ attention even though the original work was focused on production. That observation prompted further research into whether the health effect was real and, if so, how the product might be working.

For Dodd, that is where the conversation should begin.

“A big part of it is your goal. What are you trying to accomplish with the product? That’s really where it starts,” he says.

Start With The Health Question

Yeast-derived products can influence the animal through several potential pathways, including effects on the rumen environment, intestinal function, immune signaling and inflammation. Those pathways are interconnected, making it difficult to attribute a health response to a single mechanism.

Dodd describes one possibility as an immune system that is better prepared to respond without remaining chronically activated.

“That immune system is maybe primed and ready, but it’s not activated. You’re not using energy with that. But it’s primed and ready so that when it’s called upon, it charges in and hits it a lot harder, but then also shuts down and goes back to the homeostasis that we need,” he explains.

When considering products intended to support health, the goal is not necessarily to stimulate immunity continuously. A more useful target may be helping the animal respond appropriately when challenged while limiting the duration or cost of the inflammatory response.

Respiratory Disease and Digital Dermatitis Offer Early Clues

Respiratory disease is one area where this concept is being investigated. Calves face repeated immune challenges during the period when respiratory disease risk is high, creating an opportunity to examine whether nutritional interventions can influence immune readiness or recovery.

Research involving yeast products has also looked at digital dermatitis. The observations that initially drew attention to the condition illustrate an important point about this research: health responses can sometimes emerge from real-world use before researchers understand why they are occurring.

That does not make a field observation proof of efficacy. It does, however, provide a question that can be tested.

The same approach is being applied to other common cattle-health problems, including mastitis and challenges associated with the transition period. Research in these areas has not produced a single, consistent response across all products or animals. That variability is part of the reason Dodd emphasizes looking at the individual product and the question being asked rather than treating all yeast products as interchangeable.

The Product is More Important Than The Category

“Yeast” is a broad category. Products can differ in their yeast species or strains, processing, inclusion rates and other components. Those differences can influence how a product interacts with the animal.

Dodd cautions against assuming that research on one product automatically applies to another. He instead recommends finding work specific to the product you’re interested in using.

He adds that comparisons between products require evidence that they are actually equivalent.

“You need to know that they’re made exactly the same or see the research for each one,” he says.

The question should not simply be whether a product contains yeast, but what the specific product has been shown to do in the population and health challenge of interest.

Three Questions to Guide Product Selection

The growing interest in yeast and animal health does not mean every product will produce a measurable health response. Dodd recommends approaching these products with the same evidence-based mindset used for other interventions.

1. What is the health objective? A product being considered for respiratory disease risk in calves should have evidence relevant to calves and respiratory challenges. A product being evaluated for transition-cow health should be considered in that context.

2. What evidence exists for the specific product? Research on a different yeast product may help explain a potential biological pathway, but it does not establish efficacy for another formulation.

3. Is the response large enough to justify the investment? Even when a biological effect can be demonstrated, the practical question is whether it produces an outcome valuable enough to justify the cost.

“You really need to understand the economics of that product. We can’t just throw things in that are expensive and don’t get the results that we need. We need to be able to show that return for our customers,” concludes Dodd.
