The Maine Farm Bureau is authorizing use of an emergency fund to assist organic farmers who supplied the Maine’s Own Organic Milk company with milk.
Maine’s Own Organic Milk, better known as MOO Milk, announced last week that it is folding. The nonprofit farm bureau announced Wednesday that Maine Farm Bureau Disaster Relief Fund money will be used to support MOO Milk’s 12 milk suppliers as they seek long-term buyers.
A spokesman said the amount of money available has not been determined. The bureau said New Hampshire-based Stonyfield Farm is currently buying all of the milk, but that agreement is expected to last 60 to 90 days.
MOO Milk chief executive officer Bill Eldridge said last week the company was working to secure long-term contracts for the providers’ milk.
