USDA reported this morning that 29,000 more cows were sent to slaughter in July compared to a year ago. That’s a 16% increase. Some 28,000 more cows were culled in July compared to June 2008.
The increased culling does not include many Cooperative Working Together (CWT) herds from the July round, says Jim Tillison, CWT manager. “Our field audits started on July 21, and we wrapped up just this week. So most of the 25,000 CWT cows headed to slaughter in August.”
Year-to-date, culling is up 49,000 head, or 3.5% ahead of last year.
