Michigan Dairy Farmers Fined $2.7 Million For Hiring Illegals

Johannes and Anthonia Verhaar also face up to six years in prison.

Johannes and Anthonia Verhaars, Bad Axe, Mich. have been fined $2.7 million for hiring 78 illegal immigrants on their dairy between 2000 and 2007, reports the Detroit Free Press. The couple pled guilty this week to charges of hiring the illegals, and face up to six years in prison for doing so.

According to court records, the Verhaars failed to inquire about new hires’ legal residency status, and offered free housing to workers to seclude them from public view. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 5.
