The only local milk producer in southeastern New Mexico is going out of business.

KRQE-TV reports Nature’s Dairy closed its doors Thursday after nearly 35 years of providing milk to local grocery stores and schools around the state.

Nature’s Dairy co-owner Jeff Sapp says the milk producing and bottling company lost more than 30 percent of its sales in the last year.

Sapp says local grocery stores they used to sell their milk to started buying dairy products from bigger retail chains and they can’t compete any longer.

Nature’s Dairy workers packaged the final bottles Wednesday, stocked their shelves with the milk they have left and thanked their customers one last time.

About 25 people worked at the bottling company and the dairy is helping them find other jobs.
