With harvesting corn silage getting started, now is a good time to calibrate spreaders and review manure management plans for crop year 2010, says Steve Howey of the Minnesota Pollution Control Ageny..
“After silage is cut, fields are in nice shape for quality soil sampling, but the opportunity is often missed before tillage is done,” Steve says.
Silage is often cut on fields nearest the feedlot, and consequently have many manure applications over the years due to proximity to the feedlot. Sometimes, manure is hauled out on the first available ground during the silage harvest, often disregarding setbacks or a management plan. Manure spread during this time can be forgotten later, with no nutrient credits given for N and P for the 2010 crop.
