USDA reported this morning that the 2009 corn crop was a bin buster, coming in at an estimated 13.15 billion bushels, a 1% increase over 2007’s record. Yields were also the best ever at 165.2 bu/a, up almost 5 bu/a over the record set in 2004.
Soybean production also jumped 13% over 2008 to 3.361 billion bushels. Yield per acre was also a record, at 44 bu.
Alfalfa production was up 2% over last year, coming in at 71.03 million tons. Cotton production, though acres were up 2% from last year, was down 3%.
AgWeb is also reporting the numbers in today’s report are not final, since there are significant acres of corn unharvested in the Midwest—from Michigan through the Dakotas. Soybeans are still in the field as well in Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia. USDA will be re-surveying growers in these areas to come up with final yield and production figures.
