The Animal Health Division of Bayer HealthCare, LLC, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin’s Sheila McGuirk, introduce the Breathe Easy BRD Detection & Treatment Kit to screen, identify and treat bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in calves.
McGuirk, an associate professor with the UW School of Veterinary Medicine, has developed a symptom-identification guide and scorecard to quickly screen for pneumonia in calves. The Bayer kit includes these tools plus a specially designed pouch for pockets of Baytril 100 and syringes.
BRD can afflict calves during the first few weeks of life, and if left untreated can lead to permanent lung damage, reduced milk production and long-term reproductive issues. BRD is also responsible for more than 20% of preweaning and 50% of postweaning calf deaths. “Early identification and proper treatment of dairy calf pneumonia before permanent damage can occur is crucial to maintaining a healthy and successful dairy operation,” McGuirk says.
Note that federal law restricts Baytril 100 to use by or on order of a licensed veterinarian. Extra-label use of this product in food-producing animals is prohibited.
