97-Year-Old Illinois Milk Delivery Business Files for Bankruptcy
A 97-year-old dairy business has filed for bankruptcy. Oberweise Dairy, headquartered in North Aurora, Illinois, is a home milk delivery company that delivers milk in glass bottles directly to consumers. It also has nearly 40 ice cream and dairy stores in both Illinois and Missouri. The company recently filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Friday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
The company has listed that it owes more than $4 million to the company’s top 20 unsecured creditors, including Nussbaum Transportation of Hudson, Illinois, owed more than $774,000; Greco & Sons, of Barlett, Illinois, owed nearly $722,000; and Penske Truck Leasing of Earth City, Missouri, owed more than $132,000. According to the petition, Oberweis Dairy also owes more than $173,000 to the Cook County treasurer’s office in Chicago.
The business started by Peter Oberweise, a dairy farmer himself, who began selling milk out of the back of a horse-drawn wagon in 1915. The company is owned by the family of the former Illinois state senator, Jim Oberweise. He also ran for the U.S. senate and governor but lost in the Republican primary.
