USDA reported that milk production jumped 1.7% in April in the 23 major dairy producing states over April 2009. Estimated milk production for the entire country was up 1.5%.
Most of the increase came on more milk per cow, up 61 lb/cow/day nationally. Cow numbers are 186,000 head fewer than a year ago nationally, but 3,000 cows more versus March 2010.
California milk production remained virtually unchanged from a year ago, although cow numbers are down 69,000 head from a year ago and 5,000 head from last month.
Wisconsin was one of the big gainers in April, up 5,000 head and 6.2% in production. Washington was up 7.2% in production, Michigan, 5.1%, Vermont, 3.4%, Idaho and Minnesota, 3.3%.
