FDA To Begin On-Farm Drug Tests

FDA will begin on-farm drug testing of milk on 900 dairy farms that previously had drug residues found in meat.

The International Dairy Foods Association confirms that the Food and Drug Administration will begin on-farm drug testing of milk on 900 dairy farms that previously had drug residues found in meat.


The farms, on FDA’s “Residue Violator Alert List,” will be tested for up to 26 different drugs. The testing is expected to begin in mid-January and continue through September 2011. Many of the drugs are currently not being screened for under the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance.

The list includes: Ampicillin, Cephapirin, Cloxacillin, Penicillin G, Erythromycin,
Tylosin, Enrofloxacin, Sarafloxacin, Chlortetracycline, Oxytetracycline, Tetracycline,
Doxycycline, Sulfachloropyridazine, Sulfadiazine, Sulfamerazine, Sulfadimethoxine,
Sulfamethazine, Sulfapyridine, Suflaquinoxaline, Sulfathiazole, Tripelennamine,
Thiabendazole, Pirlimycin, Flunixin, Bacitracin, Virginiamycin, and Tilmicosin.
