Citing declining milk demand as the reason for the move, UNC says the facility’s production will be absorbed by other plants in the cooperative’s network.

The Upstate Niagara Cooperative (UNC) announced Thursday that it plans close its manufacturing facility in Rochester, N.Y., by the end of 2025, a decision company officials described as “difficult but necessary” in response to changing market conditions and declining demand for fresh fluid milk.

According to the company, the closure will affect just under 100 employees. All impacted workers and relevant parties have been notified, with UNC saying it is committed to supporting employees throughout the transition.

“UNC Dairy recognizes its long-standing presence in the Rochester community and deeply appreciates the contributions of its employees and the support of the community. This was not a decision we took lightly,” says Kevin Ellis, CEO of UNC. “We understand the significant impact this will have on our dedicated employees and their families. Our absolute priority now is to support them through this transition.”

Production at the Rochester facility will be absorbed by other UNC Dairy plants in the cooperative’s network. Company officials say this move is intended to help streamline operations while minimizing disruption for customers in the Rochester area. In addition, UNC plans to transition its truck maintenance program to a third party in an effort to reduce costs and improve performance.

Officials say the closure aligns with the cooperative’s long-term strategy to remain competitive and sustainable in the face of shifting consumer preferences and an overall decline in fresh milk consumption.
