Dairy cow culling gains speed

U.S. dairy producers sent 24,000 more cows to Federally-inspected slaughter plants in September than a year ago. That’s a 12% increase.
September culling numbers were 2,000 head less than August, but August numbers probably reflected the bulk of cattle culled through the Cooperatives Working Together program’s fifth round of herd retirements. Note: A sixth CWT round was announced this morning. Go to: www.agweb.com/get_article.aspx
For the year, 88,000 more cows were culled to date than in 2007, about a 5% increase.
