Dairy Cow Culling Keeps Apace

Year-to-date, 556,000 dairy cows have been slaughtered, up 8% over last year.

Although February 2013 culling of dairy cows was 2,000 head less than last year, that’s only because February 2012 was a leap year. On a per work day basis, about 520 more cows were being slaughter this February compared to last year.

The United States Department of Agriculture released the February slaughter report this afternoon. The numbers are based on cull dairy cows moving through Federally inspected plants.

Year-to-date, 556,000 dairy cows have been slaughtered, up 8% over last year.
