Dairy cow slaughter up


USDA reported this morning that dairy cows slaughtered through Federally-inspected plants were up 4,000 head in May compared to last year, a 2% increase. Cow culling did slow compared to April, however, down 24,000 head. For the year, dairy cow slaughter is up 14,000 head, a 1.3% increase.

Total commercial red meat production set a May record, up 4% from 2007. For the year, red meat production is up 7%.

Total beef production was up 4% and pork production climbed 3%. Veal was down 7%; lamb and mutton were down 3%.
