Dairy Pulse: Farmers Share Their Silage Acre Predictions

This year, 27% of dairy producers are likely to dedicate between 15%-50% to silage production.

Within the coming days and weeks, farmers will soon take to the fields to get their 2021 crops in the ground. During the first quarter of the year, dairy producers have seen feed prices hit highs not seen in years, and this may be affecting the amount of homegrown feed they choose to produce come summer and fall.

To help provide some insight, we asked dairy producers this question: What percent of your acres will be dedicated to silage production in 2021? Here’s how they responded.

This year, 27% of dairy producers are likely to dedicate between 15%-50% to silage production. This is closely followed by the 25% group producers who plan to utilize 75% of their acres for silage. In a neck-in-neck race for third place, 18% of producers said they will appropriate 1%-15% of their land for silage, followed by 16% using none and 14% using 50%-75%.
