Rottinghaus Holstein Farm
Rottinghaus Holstein Farm is located in Seneca, Kansas, where they milk 480-cows in a herringbone parlor along with four robotic milkers. Calves are raised in hutches for the first 10 days before being raised in a group housing system using automatic feeders. David Rottinghaus is the 3rd generation to return to the farm and farms alongside his wife, Jan. Their daughter, Stacy, returned last year to become the 4th generation working on the farm.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you face raising your own replacements?
A: “Our biggest challenge is fighting calf illnesses throughout the winter. We have made big headway in the last year when we discovered many of our calves are anemic. We now do all of our own blood testing on our calves and give iron and vitamin supplements to those that need it. These steps help ensure that our calves stay healthier and those that do fall sick bounce back much quicker.” – Stacy
