The Food and Drug Administration has entered a consent degree of permanent injunction that prevents a California veal operation from buying or selling animals for use as food.
Virtue Calves, Galt, Calif., operated by John C. Virtue and his daughter, Shannon L. Virtue, will not be able to buy or sell calves for food until they “take certain actions to assure that animals with illegal drug residues do not enter the food supply,” according to an FDA new release.
The decree requires defendants to keep written records to identify treated animals and to segregate medicated and non-medicated animals.
According to FDA, previous inspections of the veal operation found recurring violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act that the defendants failed to correct.
