February cow killing continues rapid pace

Nearly 245,000 cull dairy cows were sent to slaughter through Federally-inspected plants in February, up 14% over February 2008.
Since February 2008 was a leap year, the rate of culling was actually 18% higher. And if you stretch the analysis to actual business days in the month, February culling was closer to 20% higher than last year.
February 2009 culling was a bit slower than January 2009, about 4.4% less on business-day basis.
Through the first two months of 2009, culling is running 43,000 head ahead, or about 4.3%.
