The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that U.S. dairy farmers sent 12,000 more cows to slaughter this July compared to last year, a 5% bump. However, there was also one more working day in July 2013 than last year, which could account for most of the increased culling number.
July culling was up 31,000 head over June. But here again, there were two more working days in July than June. On a daily basis, July culling was up about 400 cows.
Year-to-date, 1,818,000 dairy cows have been sent to slaughter. That’s up 56,000 head over last year, or 3.2%.
