USDA reported this morning that dairy producers sent 7,000 more cull dairy cows to slaughter through Federally-inspected plants in June than a year ago. www.usda.gov/nass/PUBS/TODAYRPT/lstk0708.txt
Keep in mind, though, that total cow numbers in June were still up 133,000, according to last week’s June milk production report.
Producers also culled 14,000 fewer cows in June compared to May. usda.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda/current/MilkProd/MilkProd-07-18-2008.txt
Year-to-date, 21,000 more cows have been slaughtered, up 1.7% from the same period in 2007.
