Milk production might finally be trending downward, USDA reported this afternoon. June milk production for all 50 states was down 0.2% from a year ago. January through June milk production was also down 0.2% for the United States.
Cow numbers are also starting to decline, with an estimated 9.235 million head of cows on farms in June. That’s still 14,000 more cows than a year ago, but 34,000 head fewer than in May and 77,000 head fewer than January.
California was down 4.1% in milk production in June, with 37,000 fewer cows. Idaho was also down 0.9%, though cow numbers there remained virtually unchanged.
In the Northeast, New York was up 1.9% in milk, but Pennsylvania was down 0.2% and Vermont was down 4.6%.
The Midwest continued strong, with Wisconsin up 2.8%, Minnesota, up 3.5%, Michigan, up 3.7% and Iowa up 2.5%.
