March Dairy Cow Slaughter Picks Up

USDA reported this morning that dairy cow slaughter in March was 18,000 head higher than in March 2009, a 7.6% increase.

USDA reported this morning that dairy cow slaughter in March was 18,000 head higher than in March 2009, a 7.6% increase. Dairy producers also sent 33,000 more cows to McDonalds in March than in February, a three-day shorter month.

Year-to-date, 712,000 cows have been processed through federally inspected plants. That’s 50,000 fewer than 2009 through March. But this year’s culling has been done without the assistance of Cooperatives Working Together herd buyouts.
