Milk Haulers Honored As South Dakota Heroes

The South Dakota Dairy Producers (SDDP) recognized the state’s 188 licensed milk haulers as true heroes following one of the roughest winters in memories this past year.

Many of the haulers battled fog, snow, sleet and high winds for days, even weeks on end, this year to pick up milk from the state’s 400 dairy producers.

In a resolution passed this week, SDDP “acknowledged the importance of all the milk haulers of this area and South Dakota, and do hearby announce the first ever SDDP—Dairy Most Valuable Player Award to all South Dakota licensed milk haulers….” The resolution goes on to request that each state milk producer and milk buyer provide individual recognition and appreciation to their milk hauler during June Dairy Month.

“Many of these haulers went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure milk got picked up on a timely manner from our dairy farms,” says Roger Schiebe, SDDP executive director.

“In some cases, haulers had to chain up and be pulled through farm lanes for as many as 10 consecutive pick-ups to get to the dairies to pick up milk,” he says. “Their dedication was incredible, and we thought it important to recognize the efforts of these unsung heroes.”
