Last week, USDA released dairy Margin Protection Program coverage levels by state, showing that about two-thirds of the nation’s milk supply is covered.
John Newton, an agricultural economist at the University of Illinois, took the information a step further and overlaid those state percentages on a map. See above.
Keep in mind, however, that these percentages reflect total coverage, from $4/cwt catastrophic coverage all the way up to $8. In California, for example, 68% of the state’s milk production is covered. But nearly three quarters of that coverage is at the basic, $4 level.
In Wisconsin, just under 65% of the state’s milk production is covered. But just 55% of that coverage is at $4, while 13% is protected at $6 and 20% is protected at $6.50. To see what coverage levels are in your state, click here.
