State by State Dairy Margin Insurance Coverage

States differ by sign up totals and coverage levels.

Last week, USDA released dairy Margin Protection Program coverage levels by state, showing that about two-thirds of the nation’s milk supply is covered.

John Newton, an agricultural economist at the University of Illinois, took the information a step further and overlaid those state percentages on a map. See above.

Keep in mind, however, that these percentages reflect total coverage, from $4/cwt catastrophic coverage all the way up to $8. In California, for example, 68% of the state’s milk production is covered. But nearly three quarters of that coverage is at the basic, $4 level.

In Wisconsin, just under 65% of the state’s milk production is covered. But just 55% of that coverage is at $4, while 13% is protected at $6 and 20% is protected at $6.50. To see what coverage levels are in your state, click here.
