Too Wet or Too Dry? The Balancing Act of Harvesting Corn Silage

The best corn silage starts with the right harvest call. A closer look at moisture, maturity and management decisions can help protect feed quality.

One of the biggest decisions during corn silage harvest is knowing when to fire up the chopper. Harvest too early, and starch accumulation isn’t complete. Wait too long, and kernels harden, fermentation becomes more challenging and the resulting silage can be tougher to manage for months.

For Luiz Ferraretto, assistant professor and ruminant nutrition Extension specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the answer starts with moisture, but it doesn’t end there. He recommends using whole-plant moisture alongside kernel milk line to determine when the crop is truly ready.

“For many years, moisture was the primary focus, while some producers relied on kernel milk line,” says Ferraretto. “Now, I think we need to consider both when making harvest decisions.”

Corn genetics, weather and overall plant health all influence how the crop dries down and how kernels mature. Ferraretto says relying on just one measurement can lead to poor harvest decisions.

“One metric is not enough anymore,” he says.

Finding the Right Harvest Window

Ferraretto likes to see corn silage harvested at 63 to 67% moisture. He strongly cautions producers not to let it fall below 60%. His concern is less about the number alone and more about what the crop is telling producers.

“As we reach 60%, there is a high chance the kernels are too hard, and it’s too difficult to process,” Ferraretto explains.

This can hurt fermentation and even decrease fiber digestibility.

“When looking at kernel milk line, I recommend harvesting when the crop is between two-thirds and three-quarters of the way down the kernel,” he says. “This range helps ensure kernels break apart during processing and improves digestibility.”

Plant health also affects the harvest window. In a healthy, low-stress crop, producers may have more room to move toward the drier end of his recommended range.

“In a good growing year, when disease pressure is low and the crop is healthy, producers can be more flexible and aim closer to 63% moisture instead of 67%,” Ferraretto says.

How Fast Does Corn Dry Down?

As harvest nears, many producers use dry-down estimates to plan chopping. Ferraretto says those estimates can help, but they should not replace field checks.

“As harvest approaches, a good rule of thumb is that dry matter increases by about 0.5 percentage points each day,” he says. “But this is extremely variable, depending on weather, the hybrid, as well as the actual maturity of the plant.”

To stay ahead of those changes, he encourages regular scouting.

“I recommend scouting fields once or twice a week as harvest approaches,” Ferraretto says. “If conditions are especially hot and dry, check them twice a week to keep up with changes.”

Why Moisture Affects Feed Value

As corn matures, its moisture content and nutritional profile change together.

“Moisture is closely tied to plant maturity,” Ferraretto says. “As the plant matures, several changes occur that affect its nutritional value.”

More mature corn usually contains more starch, increasing its energy value.

“As the plant matures, you’re accumulating more starch, which is what producers are looking for, along with more dry matter,” Ferraretto says.

But maturity can also bring a downside.

“At the same time, the plant is accumulating more lignin, making the fiber less digestible,” he says.

Kernels change, too.

“As the plant matures and starch accumulates, the kernels become harder,” he says. “They also develop more prolamin proteins, which can limit how much starch is digested in the rumen.”

As moisture drops closer to 60%, kernels become harder to process, requiring more aggressive kernel processor settings to ensure they are adequately broken apart. But harder kernels aren’t the only concern. Ferraretto says drier corn also becomes more difficult to ferment.

“As you start getting closer to 40% dry matter or above, basically we start having a lower potential for fermentation,” he says. “There is a chance we will accumulate a little less acid and consequently have a little higher pH.”

Lower-acid fermentation also creates conditions that allow spoilage organisms to thrive.

“The longer those plants stay in the field, the more likely they are to have more yeasts and molds,” Ferraretto says. “You’re bringing more yeasts and molds into the silo, which may become a problem later. If fermentation isn’t great because of the higher dry matter, then it all adds up.”

Too Wet or Too Dry?

While the ideal harvest window is relatively narrow, the consequences of missing it can be very different depending on whether the crop is too wet or too dry.

On the too wet side — around 70% moisture and above — nutrient loss and environmental risk both increase.

“When you get closer to 30% dry matter, or 70% moisture and higher, the biggest concern is nutrient loss through effluent,” Ferraretto explains. “It can also create environmental concerns.”

Excess moisture pushes liquid out of the silage mass, taking nutrients with it and reducing feed value.

“Silage harvested too early has lower starch concentration,” Ferraretto notes. “One of the reasons why we feed corn silage is because of the energy value coming from starch.”

On the dry side, corn gains dry matter, kernels harden, fermentation becomes more difficult and fiber digestibility can drop. The goal is to balance starch, fiber digestibility and fermentation performance.

“Every dairy has different goals, so harvest timing should be adjusted based on each farm’s needs,” he says. “Some farms may prioritize higher tonnage and can accept slightly lower feed quality, while others may focus on maximizing nutrient value.”

When Unsure, Lean Wetter

For some dairies, custom harvest crews add another layer of planning. Choppers may move quickly from one farm to the next, and harvest windows can be tight. Ferraretto comes back to monitoring and prediction.

“Tracking moisture and plant maturity can go a long way because it gives you a better idea of where the crop is headed,” he says. “Even if the half-percentage-point-per-day estimate is not exact, it can help farms plan harvest timing when combined with regular field checks.”

When a farm must choose between chopping a little early or waiting for drier conditions, Ferraretto leans toward the wetter option — as long as the crop is not too wet.

“When choosing between harvesting wetter or waiting for the crop to dry down, I would lean toward the wetter option, unless the crop is excessively wet,” Ferraretto says.

Making the Harvest Call

Moisture continues to affect the crop after chopping. It influences how silage packs, how well the pile or bunker keeps air out and how efficiently fermentation occurs.

“With a drier corn plant, very often the particles end up being a little coarser than they should,” Ferraretto explains.

Coarse particles make tight packing harder.

“If you have coarser particles, very likely you’ll be trapping more air in between those particles, so it will require longer packing,” he says. “Alternatively, heavier tractors, but I think more likely it will be longer periods of packing.”

If a farm expects to harvest drier material, Ferraretto recommends shortening chop length.

“If you know you will be harvesting drier material, consider shortening the chop length slightly to help manage the coarser particles,” Ferraretto says.

Those settings should be checked throughout harvest.

“We want to make sure we have proper particle size to ensure effective fiber, but we have to adjust based on moisture as we go with the harvest,” he adds.

Both chop length and kernel processing settings may need fine-tuning across fields on harvest days.

“You have to pay close attention to those and adjust as you go to make sure you are meeting your goals of better processing but also proper particle size,” Ferraretto says. “At the end of the day, you don’t want to be either too short or too long.”

He encourages producers to work with their nutritionist on a starting point and a plan for adjusting as wetter or drier material comes in.

Three Silage-Season Reminders

Silage harvest can often feel like organized chaos on dairy farms. Ferraretto says three practices should stay front and center for producers and custom harvesters:

1. Track moisture before and during harvest.
Moisture checks should begin before the chopper enters the field and continue as harvest moves across fields and conditions change. Ferraretto says regular monitoring gives farms a better chance to adjust in real time and put up higher-quality silage for cows.

2. Put strong SOPs in place.
Clear procedures can help crews stay consistent when harvest days get busy and details are easy to miss. Ferraretto says having a good SOP for each part of harvest can go a long way during one of the most demanding times on a dairy.

3. Prioritize safety.
With more people on site and large equipment running long hours, risk climbs quickly. Ferraretto says safety needs to stay front and center, and everyone involved should understand where they need to be, what they are doing and how to avoid potential problems.

Better Moisture, Better Silage

Corn silage harvest moves quickly, but the choices made during those few days can shape feed quality for months to come.

“Once the crop is chopped, you don’t get a second chance to fix moisture,” Ferraretto says. “Taking the time to measure and make adjustments during harvest can have a big impact on the silage you put up.”

Moisture affects how well corn silage ferments, packs and holds its quality in storage. Harvest too wet or too dry, and producers can run into challenges with fermentation, feed value and consistency at the bunk. Finding the right harvest moisture helps protect the crop and sets up better silage for the months ahead.
