The United States Department of Agriculture released its August price estimates this afternoon, showing the U.S. all-milk price at $19.30/cwt. That’s 30¢/cwt higher than July and $1.10 higher than August 2012
Not all states showed this bump in prices year over year. Wisconsin, for example, had an all-milk price of $19.20 this month, identical to what it received a year ago. But California showed about a $1.30/cwt gain this month compared to last year, at $17.80/cwt. Nevertheless, it was still $1.40 less than the Midwest and $1.50 to $2/cwt less than New York and Pennsylvania, respectively. Idaho’s August all-milk price was $18.50, 90¢ higher than last year.
Feed prices are also starting to mitigate. USDA reported August corn prices at $6.02/bu, down 71¢/bu from July and $1.60/bu from a year ago.
Alfalfa prices have likely plateaued, with August alfalfa prices averaging $200/ton. That’s down $9/ton from July.
