USDA reported this afternoon that August milk production in the top 23 states was up 1.5% over a year ago. July milk production was up 1.8%, 0.1% more than originally estimated last month.
Cow numbers were down 3,000 head in August compared to July, but still running 137,000 more head compared to August 2007 in the 23 major states.
California reported a 1.9% decline in milk production, due to milk per cow being down 60 lb. in August compared to last year. California cow numbers were still 24,000 ahead of last year, but down 3,000 from July.
Texas reported the single biggest jump in production in August, up 17.2%. Cow numbers jumped 37,000 head in the Lone Star State, and milk production was up 100 lb./cow.
