More than 200 workers are now on strike in western New York. They’re in a dispute with Saputo Dairy. The Teamsters Local 264 telling media in the area the negotiations broke down over wages. Now, 234 workers are on the picket line outside the plant that is known as Friendship Dairies in Allegheny County. It’s considered one of the county’s largest employers. The plant makes sour cream, buttermilk and cottage cheese.

Saputo Dairy is based in Quebec. It said in a statement it is working in good faith to reach a new collective agreement for its valued teammates.

No “Plant Butter”

It appears the term plant butter won’t be appearing on products anytime soon. A group that sets international food standards has decided not to take up a proposal from the European Margarine Association. It would have allowed members to call their products “plant butter” under the international standards for fat spreads and blended spreads.

The National Milk Producers Federation released a statement about the debate, saying that the global support for the proper use of dairy terms remains strong and that strength raises its hope that worldwide consistency when it comes to labeling can soon be achieved.
