Holstein springer values remained stalled in Wisconsin, but saw an upward tick in all other reported markets over the past month. The positive climb runs a bit counter to current market conditions reported by University of Wisconsin Professor Emeritus Bob Cropp on a recent edition of Iowa State University’s Dairy News and Views podcast. Cropp said national milk cow numbers have been on a steady decline since May, and down 85,000 head from May to September 2021. He predicted the current environment of high feed costs will keep that trend going through at least the end of the year. Cropp also noted that many dairies planning expansions have temporarily put those plans on hold. Nonetheless, demand for springers remains a bit stronger, at least for now.
