October dairy cow slaughter slowed up a bit compared to year earlier levels, USDA reported this morning. Dairy cows moving through federally inspected plants totaled 236,000 head last month, down 9,000 cows from October 2007.
Compared to September 2008, however, 12,000 more cows were culled in October. And year-to-date, 79,000 more dairy cows have met their maker than in 2007. That’s a 3.8% jump in cow kill year-to-date.
Those numbers could accelerate through the end of the year with the Cooperatives Working Together program entering its second cow-kill program this year. Bids must be submitted to CWT by next Monday. For more information on the CWT program, go to: www.cwt.coop.
